'In Belgium, I took an intensive course in Dutch and an integration course. I learned how to apply for a job in the Higher Up course at the Flemish Employment and Training Service. I was given all sorts of tips about the work culture in Belgium. And, my bachelor degree was also eventually recognised.'
In "De Leerwinkel " that guides adults in selecting an educational programme, Mydear came into contact with RiseSmart, the career coaching and outplacement division of Randstad. 'The AZ Delta hospital in Roeselare was looking for an intern for their quality department. Elene, my consultant at RiseSmart, was a huge support. She helped me fill in my employment contract. She also gave me advice, such as when I should be assertive. She also drew my attention to a computer course at the hospital.'
Mydear has been a paid intern at the hospital for six months now. 'I'm really happy about this. At AZ Delta, I'm working on setting up a document management system. Doctors, nurses, and other staff use this system to input documents. I've also helped in the preparation of some audits. The atmosphere is nice and I have some great colleagues. It took a long time to find the internship, but it was worth the wait.
My advice to newcomers? Hang in there even if it costs you a lot of time and energy. I've been given a new chance in Belgium thanks to so many people and organisations. When I perform well in my job, I give something back to my new homeland.'
