Mentored by an industry expert, you will contribute to the development of synthetic routes towards organic molecules in the context of a drug discovery project. The ultimate goal is to contribute to delivering synthetic methods that enable medicinal chemistry activities in finding novel drug candidate molecules (=diversity-oriented approaches), or provide methods that enable a more efficient, scalable, green and sustainable production of selected compounds (=target-oriented approaches). In both contexts, you will have the chance to contribute to the improvement of patients' lives.
- Work together with a group of highly motivated scientists in a pioneering laboratory in the J&J chemistry department.
- Participate in active drug development programs.
- Evaluate synthetic methods to support the structure-activity-relationship (SAR) studies or evaluate and optimize synthetic steps to enable best process chemistry.
- After an initial training and introduction in the department, able to independently operate (under supervision) and propose alternatives or solutions for challenging synthetic routes.
You will be responsible for conducting research directed to developing creative solutions to synthetic organic chemistry problems across a portfolio of projects. In the Discovery Process Research (DPR) team, we focus on developing new synthetic organic transformations. The DPR team operates across a portfolio of projects at the interface of the discovery and development space, from lead identification through the selection of drug candidates. The group facilitates medicinal chemistry research by finding solutions to synthetic bottlenecks, enabling access to novel chemical space, and translating chemistry innovations to the development of efficient routes for the synthesis of small molecule drug candidates advancing into development. The API Development chemistry team (DC) team generates creative and innovative ways towards new synthetic routes and solutions that enable large scale manufacturing of target Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. Process chemists and engineers team up with analysts, crystallization, and safety experts to design the best manufacturing process. These teams work closely together with the pilot plants and bridge with commercial production. New chemical processes are developed meeting stringent requirements concerning safety, environment, technology, economy, and quality. As a result of these endeavours, drug candidates are accelerated through the development pipeline by enabling sufficient supplies of active ingredient in support of clinical trials, registration and finally commercialization. In both the DPR as well as the DC teams, internship positions are available with the focus on synthetic organic chemistry. This vacancy text serves as general description for several possible internship positions.
